I posted this 5 years ago and for better or worse, it’s just as relevant, and perhaps even more so. It’s worth a repost and an update, and Dr. Mary Frances Berry in particular gives us some good advice.
There are many people who can speak more eloquently than I can about Martin Luther King and what his life and work should inspire us to do. Here are just 2 of them.
This a post from a blog called WriteSomeShit, which I totally wish I had thought of. It’s from 8 years ago, but still holds true today: “Dear White People, Before You Post Dr. King Quotes To Make Yourself Feel Good…” She included many MLK quotes, but this one about the failure of white moderates to speak up especially hit home for me: “Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.”
In 2021, The Daily Show featured Dr. Mary Frances Berry, a life-long activist and close family friend of the Kings. She is a history professor at UPenn and former chairwoman of the US Commission on Civil Rights: “You have to be willing to say, ‘here I stand and you will go no further, because I have moral authority in what I’m doing.’” In 9 minutes she gives really good advice about how to make change, and it’s not by quoting MLK. She talks about being in it for the long haul, and I think we are starting to understand that and we are in good company.
