Hello my lovelies. It’s been a while since I posted, so thank you for your patience–I missed you! You thought I moved to Canada, didn’t you? While my grandparents were from there and it was tempting to consider, I vowed to stay here and fight. And also, Canada is having none of us 2nd generation folks. I do aim to resume posting regularly, although “regularly” may be broadly interpreted. Like everyone, I’m doing the best I can.
To summarize the last 4 months, I did indeed determine who the hell was eating all my jilo in the garden. I watched, helplessly as a bahstid squirrel climbed up the plant stem, sat upon the bowed top like he ruled the world, and plucked the last remaining jilo and ate it. Right in front of me. When he was done, he plucked a leaf and ate that. What the ever living hell? Go eat the neighbor’s pumpkins like a normal rodent, you little fucker. I have say, it kind of broke my gardening spirit. First Trump, and then a goddam squirrel. A girl can only take so much.
I may turn my efforts to flowers next year so I can discover new ways urban critters can torment me.
On a happier note, I spent the rest of the fall madly getting ready for winter, like, well, a country critter. Last fall I bought a piece of land with my partner and we were busy all 2025 setting up camp. There will be more posts about that, including how long it takes to dig a hole 10 ft wide, 24 ft long and 6 ft deep, by hand. Stay tuned!
And finally I would like to acknowledge that our democracy is still standing. OK, so perhaps it’s more of a limping stagger, like a movie hero, with multiple knife wounds, a few bullet holes and bleeding profusely, but goddammit, still staggering on and still swinging. Sorry to leave you with that image, so how about one last thought:
I hope you all can find a sliver (or more!) of peace as we slip and slide from this year to the next. See you on the other side!
