Guerilla Sweet Potatoes Update

After several weeks with a couple of heat waves and having to repair some leaks in the boat my friend made, we were finally able to check on the 2 guerrilla sweet potatoes at the stealth camp site (say that 3 times fast). I’m happy to report they are doing fine. They were sporting a few small round holes from some munching insect, but the holes did not appear to be life-threatening. The new leaves sprouting were hole-free and looking good. No other critters seemed to be interested in them, yay!

The other plants were starting to encroach, so we pulled those out and we were in the middle of a heat wave, so poured about 2 gallons of water to give them little boost. We also had to clear out the campground — there was a fair amount of plant growth in just the 3 weeks we were away, but we asked for it by giving the understory unobstructed light with the first clearing. We know we’re not going to win, we just have fun playing the game. Here’s a before and after:

Back at the raised beds at the school near my unstealthy, accessible house, the 8 plants are also chugging happily along. Both are making up for the drama that is my backyard garden.

And that’s all I got for you today folks. May all your gardens be guerrilla and your camps be stealthy.

  1. A friend’s “leaking” boat. And a sudden return to an isolated burial ground for sweet potatoes. Be careful, Sandy. I’m starting to get a real Dateline NBC vibe.

  2. Ha ha! Don’t worry Geo. It’s gonna take more than a leak and an isolated patch of woods to bring this crabby perimenopausal woman down. The friend actually has more to worry about…;-)
